The Maxwell Underground Mine, owned by Malabar Resources Ltd has commenced operations at their Hunter Valley site, with planned production of up to 8 million tonnes of per annum and approvals in place out to 2046, the mine targets high quality coal with the majority being metallurgical coal.

 

Malabar Resources is an independent Australian-based resources company located in the Upper Hunter Valley, in New South Wales. 

 

In addition to the Maxwell Underground Mine, Malabar owns the Maxwell Infrastructure site, and exploration licenses including the Spur Hill Underground Project providing access to around 1Bn (JORC Resource) tonnes of high-quality coal. This underpins our strategy of developing multiple underground operations targeting high quality coal.


ABOUT THE ROLE 

 

Reporting to the Project Manager, the Project Controller will be responsible for ensuring timely implementation and oversight of the Maxwell Underground Mine Project – Stage 1 & 2, in collaboration with the Project Manager.  The Project Controller position is a site-based role which will require the incumbent to work collaboratively across operational departments, and with external contracting organisations.

If successful, the key objectives will include, but are not limited to:

  • Drafting project management framework and controls.
  • Compiling reports of project performance including plan vs. actual reporting.
  • Develop and maintain master project schedules, through all phases from design through construction and commissioning, operation readiness, and handover.
  • Review and assess schedule information provided by the external service provider and contractors and incorporate it into the owner’s master schedule.
  • Facilitate regular project schedule review to track progress and resolve any issues.
  • Monitor project expenditures and ensure they align with the approved budget.
  • Collaborate with procurement, engineering, and construction teams to obtain accurate cost information.
  • Implement cost control measures to prevent cost overruns.
  • Be fully conversant with the operation of Pulse and Microsoft Excel as applied to project accounting and cost control. 
  • Prepare and present regular cost reports and forecasts to management.
  • Develop detailed cost estimates for project proposals and ongoing projects.
  • Analyse historical data and benchmarks to improve the accuracy of cost estimates.
  • Identify potential project risks and develop risk mitigation plans.
  • Working collaboratively with design consultants, project and operations teams to assess changes to project activities and translate these into the project master schedule.
  • Contract management assistance including tendering and evaluation, contractor selection and contract formation and ensuring good contract administration processes are in place.
  • Presenting updates to key finance groups (due diligence overseers).
  • Manage relationships and use ‘Best for Project’ decision making to deliver project objectives.

 

ABOUT YOU

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Project management or related field
  • At least 3 years post qualification experience in a Project Management role in mining, construction, or with a major contractor to the resources sector, with a focus on scheduling, planning, cost control, and cost estimating.
  • Experience in Underground Mine project development and associated studies (advantageous)
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully achieve Project Objectives
  • Experience in preparing, and reporting, against budgets.
  • Strong planning, organisational and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • High proficiency in project management software such as Primavera P6, MS Project or equivalent
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills
  • Recent experience in a highly productive contemporary longwall coal mine would be advantageous.
