The Maxwell Underground Mine, owned by Malabar Resources Ltd has commenced operations at their Hunter Valley site, with planned production of up to 8 million tonnes of per annum and approvals in place out to 2046, the mine targets high quality coal with the majority being metallurgical coal.

Malabar Resources is an independent Australian-based resources company located in the Upper Hunter Valley, in New South Wales.

In addition to the Maxwell Underground Mine, Malabar owns the Maxwell Infrastructure site, and exploration licenses including the Spur Hill Underground Project providing access to around 1Bn (JORC Resource) tonnes of high-quality coal. This underpins our strategy of developing multiple underground operations targeting high quality coal.

 

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the General Manager, the Operations Manager will be responsible for ensuring business objectives and targets are achieved for all aspects of the Longwall operation through overall direction and coordination, ensuring legislative, production, safety and budget requirements are met.  In this role you will be an active participant in the development of strategy, planning, and financial management of the company.

Core accountabilities of this role will include:

  • Overseeing the Longwall operation of the Maxwell Underground Mine to ensure operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in line with the approved budget and business plan;
  • Proactive decision-making driving productivity and empowering success.     
  • Managing the development and execution of strategic goals to drive operational success, ensuring alignment with the organisation’s overall objectives and fostering continuous improvement across all facets of the operation.
  • Overseeing the strategic development of Life of Mine (LoM) plans, ensuring alignment with long-term objectives, translating these comprehensive plans into actionable and detailed annual operating plans.
  • Responsibility for the operational performance of Maxwell Underground Mine Longwall operation, working closely with all onsite resources, including contractors, to manage daily activities;
  • Conducting thorough analysis and challenging assumptions to achieve corporate objectives in safety, production, and cost management, driving continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensuring effective risk management across all areas of responsibility, aligned with the Maxwell Underground Mine’s Structure and Risk Register;
  • Providing updates to the Board.
  • Leading the development, implementation, and management of the Health and Safety Management System, ensuring compliance with agreed goals and legislative requirements.
  • Maintaining accountability for meeting industry standards in Principal Hazard and Critical Controls Management.

 

This position is a key role in the development and success of the Maxwell Underground Mine. Tertiary qualifications combined with a Mining Engineering Managers Certificate of Competency for NSW Underground coal are essential. This position requires a can-do attitude and hands-on approach, the successful candidate must be prepared to challenge the norm and contribute effectively in a lean, collegiate team environment. Recent experience in the development and/or operation of a highly productive Underground Longwall mine would be highly desirable.
